2019 Pat Geary Memorial

The annual Pat Geary Memorial competition was held on 23rd and 24th November 2019 at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club.

Selectors chose a very young team to represent Zone 14 against some very strong opposition from Zones 15, 6 and 2. Each of the latter with their fare share of State players. Zone 14 side included 6 debutantes to zone representation, the youngest being Josh Carney at 17 years old.
The first game against zone 15, saw our boys off to a slow start, very quickly getting behind by 20 shots. However, once the nerves abated and the natural abilities kicked in our sides fought back to get within 6 shots of the opposition. However, experience told in the end and zone 15 won the game 102 to 65. Zone 14 were best served by Greg Keft’s rink, consisting of Josh Carney, Jake Waterhouse, Dale Jeffery as well as Kefty. These guys ran out 22-16 winners. Kent Price’s rink, including Paul Jopson, Sean Mearrick and Ben Atterton also played well but ultimately were narrowly defeated.

The second game against the strong zone 6 team from Central Coast again resulted in a loss to our guys. The end result being 77-96.
Zone 14 were best served by Matt Carter’s rink who won their game 27-24. Matt was very capably supported by Mitch Williams at third while Jai Whelan and Cody Griffin set the game up well with some very good draw bowling.

Rick Southam’s rink also played well but were narrowly defeated by 2 shots. In this game Zone 14’s lead Barry Smith was very consistent, second, Paul Harrison, played well as did skip, Ricko. Josh Forbes, in an uncustomary role of third, was very strong.

The third game was played against Zone 2, the ultimate winners of the event. Although resoundingly beaten, the zone 14 players continued to fight hard throughout the match but the class of the opposition, consisting of several past and present State players, ultimately won the day for Zone 2.
